How to Write a Cover Letter
Cover letters are required in life almost by everybody. Most commonly, cover letters are needed during job applications. We must differentiate between a cover letter and an application letter. They are a platform that enables a potential employee to say more about themselves.
How is a good cover letter written? There are many guidelines that must be followed so as to write an excellent cover letter. First of all capture your bio-data information perfectly. Do not leave out your name, physical address, email and phone number. They should be as clear as possible for easy access. The next thing is to capture information of the manager or any other hiring officer. This entails knowing the name to use which you should have researched.
Seriousness will be noted if the cover letter is addressed to a particular manager by name. After noting his or her name then indicate the position he or she holds. It is also good to capture details of the company including address and email. Your personal information and the company information should follow each other.
After the address write your first paragraph which is salutation. Do not use catchy phrases aimed at attracting unnecessary attention. Do not salute the person with ordinary clich? sentences such as ‘dear Sir or Madam’. Introduction should involve you saying who you are in professional circles. Since your name is at the address you do not have to mention it again. This would be comic and it can potentially deny you the job.
As you proceed with your introduction ensure that you create an impression of happiness for wanting the job. Say why you like this company. Proceed to also express excitement at the job you are applying for. With this excitement relate the job with your personal skills.
The most important part of a cover letter is the main body. This is the point when you actually pitch for the job. Prove you actually deserve the job. Reiterate your skill sets that are related to the job you are applying for. Show in clear terms how your skills applied to the job will lead to growth of the company. Back this up with your previous work experience.
In conclusion, ensure to again express excitement about the job you are applying for. Also, let the recruitment panel know that you can avail yourself for an interview at any time. Use words that command respect such as ‘sincerely’ and ‘regards’ when signing off. In terms of formatting your cover letter, left alignment is the best with one inch margins all round the page. You are also advised to stick to fonts that are respected as official fonts such as Times New Roman, Georgia and Arial.
